SMS QR Code Generator

Let people text you without typing your number.

Enter your number below, and optionally a message to pre-write. Scanning opens the messaging app with the text addressed and ready — the person just taps send.

Type
Encodes a website URL. Opens in the phone's browser when scanned. Encodes plain text. Displays as-is when scanned — no link, no app needed. Encodes a contact card. Phones can save it directly as a new contact. Encodes Wi-Fi credentials. Phones can join the network directly by scanning — no typing a password. Encodes an email address. Opens a pre-filled draft in the phone's mail app when scanned. Encodes a phone number. Opens the phone's dialer, pre-filled, when scanned. Encodes a text message, pre-addressed. The message itself may not always pre-fill depending on the recipient's phone — this varies by device. Opens a WhatsApp chat with the number pre-filled, and the message too if you add one. Requires WhatsApp installed (or web.whatsapp.com). Encodes a map coordinate. Opens the phone's default maps app, centered on that point, when scanned. Encodes a calendar event. Phones can add it directly to their calendar app when scanned.
Embeds your logo in the QR code's center. Every code is generated at error correction level H, the highest, which is what makes a logo possible at all — but a logo is still deliberate damage, so keep it at or below 15% of the code's area and test before printing.

Fits the whole code inside a circle — the pattern shrinks slightly to stay inside it, so it may be a little harder to scan from a distance.

The pre-written keyword is what makes this worth doing

An SMS code with an empty body is just a number you did not have to type. An SMS code with a keyword is a routable, automatable signal that arrives correctly spelled every single time:

  • JOIN on a poster, feeding a mailing-list autoresponder.
  • TABLE 12 on a table talker, so the message tells you where to go.
  • UNIT 4B on a maintenance sticker, identifying the asset without a work-order number.
  • INFO on a property board, triggering the details to come straight back.

Because the keyword arrives exactly as you wrote it, you can route or automate on it with confidence. Ask a human to type TABLE 12 and you will receive table12, Table 12, tabel 12 and a photograph of the table.

Keep it short. The whole body is encoded into the pattern, so a long pre-written message makes a denser, more fragile code for no benefit.

One honest caveat about pre-filled bodies

There has never been a single agreed standard for pre-filling an SMS body from a link, and platforms have historically disagreed about the syntax. This generator uses a form designed to satisfy both conventions at once, and it works on current devices.

The failure mode, if some particular phone does not honour it, is mild and worth knowing about: the messaging app still opens correctly addressed, just with an empty body. Nothing breaks; the person types their own message.

So design the printed material to survive that. "Text us to join" alongside the code works whether or not the keyword lands. If the keyword genuinely matters to an automated workflow, test on a real handset before a large print run.

Use international format

Enter the number with a +, the country code, then the number. Spaces, brackets and dashes are fine to type — they are formatting rather than part of the number, and they are stripped for you.

A local-format number works for people already in that country and fails silently for everyone else. If the code goes on anything that travels — packaging, a trade-show stand, a vehicle, a website — international format is the difference between working and not.

Why people text when they will not call

The practical case for SMS over a phone code is not technical. It is that a large share of your audience does not want to have a phone conversation with a stranger, and will simply not act rather than call.

Texting also works outside business hours without anyone feeling they are imposing, leaves a written record of what was agreed, and gives you a queue you can work through rather than a missed call with no context. For enquiries arriving from print at 9pm, that is the whole ballgame.

Against WhatsApp: SMS needs no app and works on every phone sold, which makes it the safer default in markets where WhatsApp is not near-universal.

Frequently asked questions

Does it send the text automatically?

No. It opens a draft and the person taps send. No platform permits a scanned code to send a message on someone's behalf.

Can I use a shortcode instead of a full number?

Yes, if your messaging provider issues you one. Shortcodes are well supported by messaging apps and encode to less data, which makes the code coarser and more robust into the bargain.

Does the sender pay?

Standard messaging rates apply, which on the large majority of modern plans means it is included. If your audience might be roaming or on pay-per-message plans, a short note on the printed material is courteous.

Why does my SMS code look so much simpler than my vCard one?

Because a number and a short keyword are a tiny amount of data. That is a genuine advantage: these produce coarse, forgiving codes that scan at small sizes and survive poor printing better than almost any other type.
