How to Scan a QR Code
On any phone made in roughly the last eight years, scanning a QR code needs no app at all — the camera does it. The awkward cases are the ones nobody explains: scanning a code that's already a photo on your phone, scanning one displayed on the same screen you're holding, scanning from a laptop, and working out why a code that clearly looks fine simply refuses to register.
The short version
- iPhone (iOS 11 and later): open Camera, point, tap the yellow banner.
- Android (9 and later): open Camera, point, tap the link. Older versions use Google Lens.
- A code already on your phone: Photos on iOS, or Google Lens on Android — no second device needed.
- Always read the URL preview before tapping. That preview is your only chance to spot a malicious code.
- Most failures come down to distance, focus, glare or a missing quiet zone — rarely a broken code.
On an iPhone or iPad
Native QR scanning has been built into the Camera app since iOS 11, released in 2017. No third-party app is needed, and you should be suspicious of any that asks to be installed for this purpose.
- Open the Camera app.
- Point it at the code, using the rear camera. Fill roughly a third of the frame with the code.
- Hold steady for a moment. A yellow notification banner appears at the top of the screen showing the destination.
- Read the destination, then tap the banner to open it.
If nothing appears, check Settings → Camera and confirm Scan QR Codes is switched on — it's on by default but can be disabled.
The Code Scanner shortcut
iOS also has a dedicated scanner that skips the camera's photo interface entirely, which is faster and slightly more reliable in poor light. Add it via Settings → Control Centre → Code Scanner, then open Control Centre and tap the scanner icon. It includes a torch toggle, which is genuinely useful for codes on glossy surfaces.
Scanning a code that's already on your phone
This is the one most people don't know. If someone messages you a QR code, or you screenshot one, you don't need a second device:
- Open the image in Photos.
- Tap and hold on the code itself, or tap the Live Text icon in the lower-right corner.
- The destination appears as a tappable link.
Safari does the same for a code embedded in a web page — long-press it and choose the option to open the encoded link.
On Android
Android is less uniform than iOS because manufacturers customise the camera app, but the broad picture is straightforward.
- Open the Camera app.
- Point it at the code and hold steady.
- A link or notification chip appears — tap it after checking the address.
Android 9 and later generally scan from the stock camera. On Samsung devices, if nothing happens, open the camera's settings and confirm Scan QR codes is enabled — Samsung ships it off on some models.
Google Lens, for everything else
If the camera doesn't recognise codes, Google Lens will, and it's available well back into older Android versions. It's built into the Google app, the Google Search widget, and usually a Lens icon inside the camera itself. Open Lens, point at the code, and tap the result.
Lens is also how you scan a code that's already saved on the device: open Lens, switch to the gallery/photo picker, and choose the image. Google Photos offers the same thing directly from an open image.
From a computer
Desktop operating systems have no built-in scanner, so you have three practical options.
- If the code is an image file or on a web page: the simplest route is usually not to scan it at all. Right-click the image, copy its address, and check whether the page it came from links the destination directly.
- With a webcam: browser-based scanners use the webcam and decode locally in the page. Prefer one that states it does the decoding client-side, and treat any that uploads your camera feed to a server with suspicion.
- Just use your phone. Pointing a phone at your monitor works perfectly well, and is usually faster than finding a desktop tool.
Scanning a code off a monitor is reliable, with two caveats: turn the screen brightness up, and tilt the phone slightly off-perpendicular so the screen's own reflection doesn't wash out the code. Refresh-rate banding on the camera is normal and rarely prevents a read.
When a code won't scan
Work through these in order — the first three account for the large majority of failures.

Scanning safely
A QR code can't contain a virus — it holds text, and text doesn't execute. The real risk is that the text is a link somewhere hostile, and that you follow it without looking. Attackers exploit this by pasting their own sticker over a legitimate code in public places; parking meters, restaurant tables, and posters at transport hubs are the usual targets. The technique has picked up the name "quishing."
- Read the preview before tapping. Every modern phone shows the destination first, specifically so you can check it. Look at the actual domain, not the words around it.
- Be sceptical of codes in public places, particularly ones that look stuck on rather than printed as part of the surrounding material. A sticker over an existing code is a red flag.
- Never enter payment details or passwords on a page you reached by scanning a code you didn't expect. Navigate to the organisation's site yourself instead.
- Treat shortened links with extra care. They're normal for dynamic codes and legitimate, but they also hide the final destination until you've arrived.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an app to scan QR codes?
No. Every iPhone since iOS 11 and effectively every current Android phone scans QR codes from the built-in camera. Dedicated scanner apps are unnecessary, and many are ad-supported or request permissions well beyond what scanning requires. If your camera doesn't scan, use Google Lens on Android or check the Camera setting on iOS before installing anything.
How do I scan a QR code from a screenshot on the same phone?
On iPhone, open the screenshot in Photos and long-press the code, or tap the Live Text button in the corner — the link becomes tappable. On Android, open the image in Google Photos and tap the Lens icon, or open Google Lens and pick the image from your gallery. Neither needs a second device.
Why does my camera see the code but nothing happens when I tap?
Usually the code contains something your phone has no handler for. A geo: location code on an iPhone is the classic example, as is a Wi-Fi code with a malformed security type. The camera decodes the text fine but can't work out what app should act on it. Try scanning with Google Lens or another reader that will show you the raw decoded text.
Can I scan a QR code from a printed page in low light?
Yes, though the camera needs enough light to distinguish dark from light modules. Use the torch — via the iOS Code Scanner in Control Centre, or your camera's flash toggle — but angle the phone slightly so the light doesn't bounce straight back off glossy stock. If a code has to work in a dim setting like a restaurant, that's an argument for printing it larger on matte material.
Does scanning a QR code share my personal information?
The scan itself shares nothing — decoding happens entirely on your device. But a dynamic code routes you through a redirect service, which can record that a scan happened along with your approximate location, device type and time, in the same way any website can. That's ordinary web analytics rather than anything unique to QR codes, and it applies once you follow the link, not at the moment of scanning.
